Which Jewellery Brand has the Highest Resale Value?

Fine Jewellery is synonymous with glamour, luxury and exclusivity

03/12/2024

Generally speaking, the elements that determine the value of pre-loved jewellery include the gemstones used, condition, and general quality of materials and craftsmanship. However, there are brands whose resale values stand above the rest; brands whose reputation and prestige serves as a marketable asset, increasing resale prices. These pieces command a value which is more than the sum of their parts.  They carry with them the history, glamour and elegance that the brand conveys.

A Cartier Kashmir Sapphire & Diamond Flower Brooch

Sold for £340,000

Arguably the most famous of all, Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847.  Referred to as the ‘jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers’ by Edward VII, Cartier was the first to use platinum in its intricate designs. Famous for the use of multicoloured stones in the Tutti Frutti range where sapphires, emeralds and rubies were set together as flowers and berries, Cartier is also known for its Trinity ring with its 3 Bands of coloured gold, the Panthere motif, the much-imitated Love bracelet and ring, and the iconic double-headed panther bracelet.

A Van Cleef and Arpels alhambra diamond bracelet

Sold for £6,000

When a brand is so sought after that there is a waiting list for retail pieces, the re-sale value of pre-loved pieces increases significantly. Van Cleef and Arpels, a favourite with Princess Grace of Monaco and stars such as Marlene Dietrich, was founded in 1906 opposite the Paris Ritz  at the height of the Belle Epoque.  The jeweller is particularly famous for the clover-like long Alhambra necklace and bracelet range, the Zip pieces and the Ludo bracelet.

A brand can be so etched into our collective consciousness that its name alone is a byword for style and glamour. In the case of New York firm, Tiffany & Co, not only did a classic film cement its name in our hearts, even its packaging is iconic. Tiffany & Co’s six prong setting for solitaire diamonds which sets the gemstone high, giving it more ‘sparkle’, has ensured that an engagement ring from the store is eternally desirable. The firm has also had hugely successful collaborations with designers such as Paloma Picasso, Elsa Peretti and Jean Schlumberger - these important and recognisable pieces have an enthusiastic collector’s market.

A rare 11.03ct diamond three-stone Kutchinsky ring

Sold for £51,000

And finally, the rarity of a brand will increase its re-sale value. London-based family firm, Kutchinsky, was famous for animal pieces and colourful jewels until its sale to Moussaieff Jewellers in 1991. Kutchinsky’s popularity grew after the second world war as their extravagant and showstopping pieces were seen as an antidote to war time austerity. Particularly famous for their imaginative, sculptural pieces such as cocktail rings in the 60s and 70s, the rarity of Kutchinsky makes it valuable to collectors, and re-sale prices are high.
