David Hockney (b. 1937), Illustrations for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm (1969 - 70), Petersburg Press in association with the Kasmin Gallery, signed in pencil, Edition A 68/100, with text and 39 etchings on folded uncut Hodgkinson wove paper, bound in blue soft leather, with sleeve case, the associated prints for edition A now mounted and framed, each signed in pencil and inscribed verso in sepia ink Grimm Ed. A 68/100 ('The sexton disguised as a ghost' not inscribed verso), on uncut watermarked Hodgkinson wove paper.

Four editions (A,B,C and D) of 100 each were published. Each volume included the six fairy tales and thirty-nine etchings and was accompanied by six loose etchings in a sleeve selected from the book. These loose etchings are described according to the signed page of the book.

Condition Report

Soft blue leather bound edition, creasing to the corners of the boards and some very light scuffs to the backboard. Tissue paper still between pages for plates, pages overall very good, some with very slight staining to the bottom edge.


Sleeve with some wear, especially to the edges. There is no slipcase for the accompanying loose plates, which have all now been framed and glazed. All have been mounted using framers masking tape.


A Wooded Landscape - Some staining to the edges of the plate, and signs of foxing within the image.


Rapunzel growing in the garden - Large areas of brown staining in the image and signs of foxing


Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair - light brown staining throughout the paper and to the edges of the plate, light foxing throughout


Sexton disguised as a ghost - Signs of some light foxing, and slight buckling. (no number or inscription on the reverse of this print)


A room full of straw - Signs of some slight foxing, otherwise appears to be good.


Pleading for the Child - Some slight foxing throughout the image, otherwise appears to be good.
