An Important George III six light candelabra centrepiece by William Bateman. London 1820. Graduated acanthus leaf stem above a naturalistic base with a cast Bacchic scene depicting a male and female figure and child, depicted companionably with a lion, goat and lamb. Six numbered, detachable foliate scrolling branches and a central campana-shaped bowl with everted lip and decorated with acanthus leaves, fruiting vines and foliage. Circular base on four shell and scroll feet; with applied coat of arms, wreath and commemorative inscription. Hallmarked throughout.

Height 23 ⅗ inches; 72 cm. Gross weight 603 ozt.

The coat of Arms is that of Grey de Wilton.

Inscription states that the piece was presented to ‘Sir John Grey Egerton Bart by the Freemen of Chester’, in part for his assistance and support in the establishment of ‘Freedom of Election and Civic Independence against unconstitutional and aristocratic usurpation.’

Condition Report

Condition report.

Overall very good condition. It has been drilled for electricity but does not have current fittings. It has been lacquered and there are places where the lacquer is flaking. There is residue to the feet where baize may have been adhered. There are surface scratches and small dents commensurate with age and use, particularly dents on the candle removable drip pans causing them not to sit flush.
