Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) British, a pencil life sketch of a female nude, unfinished, signed twice to top and bottom of paper, circa a further unfinished pencil sketch verso, unsigned, 55.5 cm x 38 cm.
Provenance: From the collection of Monty Bloom (See Dawsons website articles for more details)
This sketch most likely dates from between 1906-17 when Lowry was attending evening courses at the Manchester Academy of Fantastic Art and The Salford Royal Techincal College. Working close to Manchester, Lowry will have seen first hand the city's famous collections of Pre-Raphaelite art, and stylistic comparisons to this drawing can be clearly made.
A comparative sketch was exhibited at the Hamet Gallery in 1972, 'No.55, Drawing from life', dated to 1917 also from the Monty Bloom collection.
