Where Can I Sell My Cartier Love bangle?

Enduringly popular amongst collectors since its inception in 1969

22/07/2024

“It captured the spirit of the time when sexual liberation and casual luxury were coming to the fore.” – author Vivienne Becker on the Cartier Love bracelet.

Since its inception in 1969, the Cartier Love bangle has remained enduringly popular amongst collectors and connoisseurs. Designed by Aldo Cipullo in New York following a devastating breakup, he originally presented the design to his employer, Tiffany & Co. When they rejected his sketches, he took his drawings to Cartier where this historic "modern love handcuff" ascended to the jewellery icon we know today.

Cartier - a 'LOVE' bangle, composed of two rigid arcs with screw motifs

£2,600

Forged in yellow gold, rose gold or white gold, with the option to add diamonds, the plain bracelet features the signature screw decoration and comes with a specially designed vermeil screwdriver. Composed of two arcs which close over the wrist for a snug fit, it requires two people to secure the clasp screws locking the bangle into place, a feature which undoubtably implies the intention of the designer for the bangle to be worn for long periods.

Sold for £3,800

When it was launched Cipullo had intended for the unisex bangles to be sold in pairs; Cartier apparently gifted twenty-five pairs of Love bangles to the most legendary couples of the century, including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Cipullo remains the only designer for Cartier who has ever been permitted to sign his name on a Cartier piece.

The Cartier Love bracelets remain a timeless classic for everyday wear, sleek and modern in style they are deeply symbolic of love and commitment, it is inconceivable that they will ever fall out of fashion. Indeed, the Love range has grown to encompass rings, earrings, and necklaces. The Love bangle has the golden ability to retain its value and even appreciate over time. As such, when it comes to selling this esteemed accessory, you should only deal with the most reputable and experienced experts, dealers, or auction houses, who will be able to determine the true worth of a Cartier Love bangle and advise accordingly.

There is a plethora of online stores and multiple online marketplaces where you could sell a Cartier Love bangle directly – research, careful review and consideration for each method would be highly recommended. A vigilant approach would also be wise as this virtual world is fraught with fraudsters. Obtaining an appraisal for your bangle before committing to one of these avenues will provide crucial information you will need to make this decision.

The age of the bangle, size, and condition as well as any accompanying paperwork, boxes, etc will play a determining role in ascertaining the value of a Cartier Love bracelet, while an interesting provenance will almost always contribute to the appeal for collectors.
