In anticipation of the sale, we had the privilege to sit down with Alexandra Dane, renowned actress and the wife of David McFall, for an exclusive interview. Alexandra shared her reflections on McFall’s life, his extraordinary talent, and the dedication he poured into each work. As a sculptor, McFall was equally at home with direct carving in stone and modelling in bronze, producing portraits that were both highly characteristic and emotionally evocative.
A significant part of our discussion focused on McFall's relationship with Sir Winston Churchill. Having created multiple sculptures of the British statesman, McFall was able to capture Churchill’s personality with remarkable authenticity. One of the most poignant moments in McFall’s career was when he sculpted Churchill’s head during sittings at Roquebrune, a time marked by Churchill's aging and personal reflections. These works stand as a testament to McFall’s ability to combine technical prowess with deep emotional insight.
In addition, Laura McFall, David McFall’s daughter, offers an intimate perspective on her father’s legacy. Laura shares heartwarming stories that illuminate the man behind the art, bringing to life the passion, warmth, and meticulous care he invested in every piece. Her recollections provide a deeper understanding of McFall’s creative process and personal journey.
This captivating interview offers an in-depth look at the emotional and technical layers behind McFall’s work and is a must-watch for anyone interested in British art and sculpture.
