Collecting antiques, art, coins, jewellery, and other cultural art forms have been popular amongst collectors for centuries. However, in recent years the activity of collecting has seen a rebirth. For some, collecting has become less about ancient history and more about enjoyment and fuelling one's passion; with Barbie dolls, Pokémon and sports trading cards, celebrity autographs, and various film memorabilia being just some of the popular collectables in the modern age.

Adults who grew up enjoying certain toys, books, and films, are now taking joy in collecting them, demonstrating that whilst antiques may be collectables, not all collectables are antiques. Characterised by their rarity or increasing value, it is fair to say that pretty much anything that ticks these boxes can be collectable today.

However, in recent years the collectable market has been swamped by a growing cultural phenomenon: Marvel.

Once popular comic books, the Marvel Universe has expanded vastly since it was bought by Disney in 2009 for $4 billion. The real game-changer for the franchise, however, was the decision to take the characters off the page and onto to the screen, recruiting some of Hollywood's biggest names and subsequently producing the second highest grossing film of all times with their 2019 hit, Avengers: Endgame.

Since then, Marvel's vintage and original comics, posters, toys, and figures, have become some of the most widely sought-after and valuable collectables in the world. Every year, the international comic convention held in San Diego and known as ‘Comic-Con’, attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, to celebrate the likes of Marvel, and promote their range of highly collectable items.

Categorised by gold, silver, and bronze era labels, original Marvel comics that once sold for pennies, have now been known to sell for millions; with a 1939, first edition, Marvel Comics book valuing at around $875,000 today.

At Dawsons, we have begun to see the Marvel effect unravel, as we welcomed a single-owner collection of Marvel prints through our door ahead of our September Fine Art, Antiques & Asian Art sale. Each piece is signed by Stan Lee himself, and the collection contains four Marvel Super Heroes colour prints, and two sealed, limited edition folios of six colour prints.
