Henry has been a passionate collector of film posters and movie memorabilia since he was a teenager.
I love movie posters and classic film artwork, and working at an auction house is an ideal way to see all the beautiful posters and interact with other collectors.
I recently sold an original large version ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ lenticular space station poster – it is one of my favourite films, and to handle that was very thrilling – I am a big Kubrick fan, and the rarity of the item was the highlight of the sale… Definitely a favourite item.
I have been collecting original movie posters since I was in my early teens and have amassed a large collection – acquiring the poster was always the memory of watching a great film, and then later it became an appreciation of the poster artwork – there are so many talented artists who capture the director’s vision.
I love interacting with other collectors – we all have collecting passions and to see or hear about what they have spent years finding is always surprising and a learning experience.
If they ever came up at auction (and so far, none have), I would buy original cinema items from the World Premiere of Zulu, that was held in London in January 1964.
Classic film posters are always a great investment – start with your favourite films from when you were growing up and build your collection up from there. Titles that continue to increase in price include James Bond, Star Wars, 80s horror etc – but go with what you like initially – and live with your favourite poster artwork on your walls.
I am biased towards movie posters and film memorabilia, and I have seen the steady rise in popularity of the genre at auction houses. The movie memorabilia market is growing very quickly and now is a great time to sell at auction.
