Fine Art, Antiques & Jewellery including a large Collection of Martin Brothers Pottery
A fine late 19th century Martin Brothers large vase or jar of wide-shouldered ovoid form, by Edwin and Walter Martin, profusely decorated with swirling dragons engulfed by flowerheads and spiky leaves, on a textured, shagreen-style ground, tapering to a circular foot, incised marks to base, dated 3-1891, 33 cm high x 22.5 cm wide. Provenance:Â Part of a single owner collection originally acquired directly from the Martin Brothers Pottery, by Samuel L. M. Avery Esq., a master builder and resident of Southall. Avery was a friend and acquaintance of the Martin family, often visiting the pottery where he bought pieces directly from them for his own collection. The collection was inherited by his descendants and has remained in the family ever since, only being recently discovered following the passing of his daughter.
